Communication Skills thru' slides!!!
I had my end-semester (theory !!!) paper on the communications skills course yesterday. This course is a compulsory for all students to meant to enhance their communication skills. While the course material and lectures were pedestrian, then the exam was downright absurd. Sample a question from this objective question paper ( shocked !!):
Choose the correct alternative:
The following is a theory of meaning:
1) option a 2) option b 3) emotivism (I remember only the correct ans ;) ) 4) option d
Now, what does knowing the theory of meaning have to do with somebody who wants to basically enhance his writing/presentation skills? Or for that matter, what does knowing Freudian principles of id, ego and superego or "hermeneutic" theory of meaning have anything to do with communication skills? Assuming that it is good to understand the human psyche for the purpose of communication (though I really doubt it can be done thru' lecturing), how is that understanding reflected if such silly questions are asked, the questions basically being rip-offs from the course slides? I am beginning to wonder if it was a test of my short-term memory. If that was so, I am really satisfied with my performance :).
