Popular Science Reads

A post after a short, long time :)

Popular science books are a great way to learn about areas of science you don't know much about, especially if they are written by someone who can tell a tale in an intersting way. I can say that about that book that I am currently reading - Vilayanur Ramachandran's - 'Phantoms in the brain'. It is a book which gives a glimpse into the mysteries of the brain and neurological research into understanding this complex organ. If you want to know what the book is all about (or if you are just interested in knowing about the some quirky behaviours of the brain) , I suggest you listen to thise TED talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/vilayanur_ramachandran_on_your_mind.html

So, here's a little list of popular science books and authors I compiled:

  • Stephen Pinker (The Language Instinct, How the Mind Works) : Pinker is a joy to read
  • Stephen Hawking - A Brief History of Time: Who doesn't know this book?
  • Roger Penrose - The Emporer's new mind, Shadows of the Mind
  • Erwin Scrodinger - What is Life?
  • Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion, The Selfish Gene
  • James Watson - DNA: The Secret of Life

Ramachandran's book is truly amazing and delightfully simple to read.

Though more on the technical side, GEB by Hofstadter can also be considered a popular science read.

I've seen some books by the legendary Richard Feynman on elementary concepts in physics (not to mention his most famous Lectures in Physics, though this is not popular science, I think)

Didn't know of any popular science books by Feynman. Yes, GEB should have been on the list too. Its been on my reading list for a long time.
