Why need a bowl-out?

Yesterday saw a cracker of a match between India and Pakistan, which even a skeptic of 20-20 cricket like me enjoyed. But for a lively pitch, the game might have been reduced to a slam-slam affair. The two teams played with their hearts out and the match was deservedly a tie after the regulation time (borrowing terminology from football). Why then force a result through the farce of a bowl-out? Each team deserved equal points, and that is how it should have been. Even football uses a penalty-shootout only for the knockout games, where a result is essential. In a more complicated league setup, this scheme will unduly skew the quantification of team performances and magnify the elements of chance.
