Railway Coaches without seats
Travelling by suburban local trains is a nightmare and little is being done to improve the passengers' conditions. Ok. we have all heard the talk about resource crunch, etc., but some simple ideas might reduce the passsengers' plight, as I realized while travelling from Kalyan to Thane a couple of days back. Now, in the peak hours people are cramped into the coaches with everyone falling over the other. And there are the few lucky ones who do manage to get a place to sit. But not so that day. I got into a compartment meant for luggage, but which was choc-o-block with people (are they just luggage to the Railways ?). Now, here there are seats only along the walls of the coach. That makes for a lot of floor space for standing. It would be pragmatic to try having coaches with seats only along the walls, since most people are standing anyways in the peak hours. It surely doesn't solve the problem, but just makes life a bit easier and there should be no constraints in putting that in place. Can you think of more simple ideas that can help?
